How to Get Old Hairspray Off a Door?

How to Get Old Hairspray off a Door? Hairspray is a lacquer, and if it winds up on a door, it can be difficult to remove — especially if it has had time to set. The hairspray may be visible in the form of streaks on the door, or you may feel the residue when you run your hand across it. Most cleaning products won’t break down the residue effectively. In addition, what works on an unpainted door won’t work on a painted door. Use the cleaning method that’s appropriate for the finish — or lack of finish — on your door.

Things Needed

  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Soft cloths
  • Fabric softener
  • Spray bottle
  • General-purpose cleaner or mild liquid detergent

How to Get Old Hairspray off Unpainted Door

Step 1

Pour rubbing alcohol on a soft, absorbent cloth.

Step 2

Rub the alcohol on a small, hidden area of the door to make sure it won’t harm the wood.

Step 3

Rub the door in a circular motion with the cloth until all of the hairspray residues are removed.

Step 4

Moisten another soft cloth with warm water, and wipe the wall to remove the alcohol and any remaining hairspray residue.

How to Get Old Hairspray off Painted Door

Step 1

Mix one part fabric softener with two parts water in a spray bottle.

Step 2

Spray the mixture on the door, and let it sit for about 10 minutes.

Step 3

Wipe the door with a soft cloth until you no longer feel the residue. If this doesn’t work the first time, repeat. Spray on the solution, wait 10 minutes and wipe it away.

Step 4

Spray a general-purpose household cleaner or a mixture of water and a few drops of mild liquid detergent onto the wall to clean off the solution. Wipe down the wall with a moistened cloth until it’s relatively dry and all soap residue is removed.

To prevent hairspray buildup, wipe down the door with a soft cloth each time you use hairspray around the door, particularly before the hairspray has time to dry.
